UV sterilizers kill free-floating microorganisms like algae, viruses, mold and bacteria. When water passes through the unit, radiation emitted from the light bulb destroys the organisms and breaks down their DNA.
This process does not change the water chemistry or remove any toxins like ammonia or nitrite, nor does it kill any beneficial bacteria anchored in your biological filter. It is also ineffective on hair algae, since this particular type of algae is not free-floating.
UV sterilizers are effective in controlling algae in an otherwise healthy and properly set-up pond. A UV sterilizer is a necessity in Koi ponds where it is difficult to keep a lot of plants.
When connecting a UV sterilizer, be sure to mind the maximum flow rate, as too much water will pass too quickly to be treated. We recommend using a separate pump for them, as they need a weaker pump than the pond should have to be healthy.
Our UV's are made by industry pioneer Aqua Ultraviolet. Superior-quality, ultra-compact, high-output lamps keep the housing length as short as possible to minimize the likelihood of damage to the fragile glass lamps and sleeves during handling. Built-in wipers permit rapid cleaning of the exterior of the quartz tube without the need to open the unit, further reducing the risk of glass breakage. Replacement bulbs and sleeves are available.
